Carrière Frères Industrie Paris Couture Candles – A Story of Two Brothers Fascinated by Wax & Nature

Posted in Aromatherapy, Fabulous Locations, Fabulous Locations & Stores, Home Decor on January 24, 2013 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Ever since I got my first bottle of Carrière Frères candle in Paris, I’ve falling in love with their fabulous fragrance, the minimalistic candle jar with beautiful hand drawn graphic in front of the bottle. These candles not only look and smell beautiful, but have an interesting history behind it, too!

Founded in 1884, by the inquisitive and entrepreneurial minds of two brothers, Carrière Frères Industrie is the keeper of wax craftsmanship from the XVIII century. At the dawn of the industrial revolution, obsessed with patents and new inventions, the Carrière brothers revamped wax-making.

The Healing Magic of Arts & Colors

Posted in Art & Music, Home Decor, Spiritual Enlightenment with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 13, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Anyone who knows me all knows how much I love colors & anything that’s looks, feels happy and cheeruful (like my favorite cartoon character – Rainbow Brite & Carebears haha) so when I saw the photo of this chair I was instantly charmed by this colorful & stylish design …. but after learning more about the story behind it, I was more than charmed… I was truly INSPIRED!

It all started out when an pediatrician name Sidney at Cook Children’s hospital in Ft. Worth, TX. Who saw this Australian Vogue Living magazine’s editorial, thought it would be a great idea to buy and old chair, have it re-done in plain canvas, then let children loose on it with sharpies to share their own ideas and inspirations. It was obvious from the beginning that this would be a wonderful way to raise money for children’s charities. Sidney had initiated the idea that Cook Children’s hospital was in need of a palliative care program, and now that this program is well underway, she is still involved in fundraising.
The chair certainly became more exciting and meaningful when some of the young patients helped to design it… loving the mix of children’s artwork with the formal chair. Such a wonderful way to raise money for the children’s charity – an important Palliative Care Program. The Palliative Care team helps the children with symptom and pain relief, and also provides much needed psychological and spiritual support for the children, their siblings, and parents during these difficult times.
The team consists of physicians, nurses, social workers, child life specialists, psychologists, and spiritual leaders…which unfortunately is not adequately funded by insurance companies. The chair is one of the items that will be auctioned off to raise money for the Palliative care program at the hospital.
The chair project started with Cook Children’s hospital to let some of their patients design a chair. Here are photos of the kids at work.
Without any artistic traing ( of course not because they are all young kids haha) it’s just amazing to see how they use their creatives minds and imaginations combining unexpected color combinations to create this fabulous piece of art!
Even tho each kids are all with life threatening illness and going through intensive treatments, it’s amazing to see the inner world of theirs is still this colorful, happy place, filled with rainbows, flowers and magic!
Here is the finished product!!! (4 coats of clear lacquer were applied to seal the chair and protect the artwork. It also gives the chair a rich deep shine) Bellissimo !
BIG Cheers to all the wonderful creative people involved in this charity project!
We’re all often got lost in our busy lives and forgot to count our blessings! How fortuned we are to have good health, friends & family who loves & cherish us and just be able to wake up each morning to start a brand new beginnings is just amazing! So let this beautiful “Feel good chair” story inspire us to be thankful of what we have and to help others who is less fortuned than us! because after all, we can all be a “Channel for Grace” to share our love & shine some lights onto others!
Here are two of my favorite charities that I work with often, why not check out their website and see how a little donation of money, time or even shop at their online store can help those terminally ill children’s wishes come true!

The Art of Aromatherapy From Greece – Anthousa Collection

Posted in Anthousa, Home Decor with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 13, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

The Anthousa apothecary collection was born from a century old, family-owned essential oil company. Today, Anthousa starts with the world’s finest ingredients and uses the same time-tested methods to create each delicate blend. Drawing inspiration from the science of botany and the sun drenched terrain of the mediterranean, each Anthousa products is the perfect mix of Beauty, Tradition and Luxury.

Anthousa, which means the perfect bloom in Greek, launched in 2004 with 12 home ambiance scents: “They were fragrances inspired by locations of the founderMaria Christofilis has traveld or the scent her mom used to wear—very personal inspirations.
” Instead of creating a fragrance for individual wear, however, Maria decided to create a line to scent living space. “It’s like surrounding yourself with your favorite smells, and your favorite memories.”
Now with more than twenty scents and a new bath and body collection, “Anything and everything is inspiration for me: a time period, a particular moment.” To properly convey this, the fragrances had to be as true as possible. “I wanted it to be a collection where everything was very natural,” notes Maria. “There’s real cucumber, real gardenia, real ingredient notes.”
To find a fresh new scent to lighten your dorm room, study area, or bedroom, you should be aware of what you’re attracted to, says Christofilis. “Everyone is attracted to something different,” she notes. “For me, my favorite notes are Cyprus, linden blossom, and white gardenia. Cyprus reminds me of where my dad is from in Greece, Linden blossom reminds me of a fragrance my mom used to wear, and white gardenia reminds of a perfume I wore in college.”
For anyone thinking of starting her own business in beauty, Maria’s philosophy rings of Shakespearean wisdom: “It’s good to listen to the advice of people you respect and admire, but at the end of the day, you know what’s right. Do what’s exciting to you and what interests you and everything will come together.”

The Anthousa Collection invites you to experience the traditional quality of its fragrances with an Eco-Friendly innovation. This exceptional blends allows the fragrance to disperse evenly while leaving the sticks in place; reverse bundle only if you desire a more intense fragrance.

Ambiance Perfume Candles: Available individually in Anthousa’s exclusive, frosted Italian glass tumblers in 8 signature fragrances. These beautiful candles are vegetable based wax, with the purest, most elegant burn. Each 7.30 Oz Tumblers will burn beautifully for at least 50 hours!

The Art Of Illumination & The Mystical World Of Douglas Little For D.L. & Co.

Posted in D.L. & Co., Gothic Chic & Dark Glamour, Home Decor with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 13, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

I’m in awe of the creativity that lies within one Mr. Douglas Little. He’s probably best known for his signature line of luxury candles under the brand D.L. & Co., but dig a little deeper and you’ll find this is a man of many talents. His exquisite imagination reaches the deepest (and sometimes darkest) places, but he delivers it all with such haunting beauty.

Douglas Little - small

Douglas Little the founder of DL & Company was born with a desire to bring objects opulence and beauty to those who yearn for the uncommon and exquisite. Every item designed is intended to unfold like a love letter, each detail revealing a procession of small delights. Like the purveyors of curious goods in previous ages, every item is intended to stir and enthrall each and every one of the senses.

From the sleek feel of the carefully selected silk ribbons to the intoxicating atmospheres of the handmade fragrances. Douglas Little’s love of rare botanica, arcane curiosities and long forgotten sensations compel me to offer these modern heirlooms. Alchemy is the art of transformation; like those Alchemists before me, I aspire to turn leaden monotony into golden bliss. Through the intertwined poetry of the senses, DL & Co intends to transform the mundane into the magnificent.

Mr Douglas Little is a sybarite of the senses who has created award winning images and ideas for the finest names in beauty. His appetite for rarefied pleasures has compelled him to bring DL & Company into being, so that he might share with others his passion for the hidden treasures of the world. DL & CO exists for the sole purpose of bringing a more vibrant way of living into being, a refuge for those weary of the prosaic, second rate offerings that surround us all.

Within the dim, opulent parlors of D.L. & CO, detail, craft and imagination are all greeted with a tender, reverent embrace and are cordially introduced to their lusty suitors, obscure botanica, Victorian surrealism and ancient charm. The fruits of their languorous unions are all found here. We humbly invite you to lose yourselves in their subtle yet vertiginous splendor.

D.L. & Co. pays great attention on details on Packaging:

The Box

Stitched in Burmese Silk, these carefully crafted containers recall the boxes that held cufflinks and collars in the glory days gone by. Your candle or diffuser are enclosed in a black satin ribbon imported from France, chosen for its exquisite sheen and weight.

The Tissue

The meticulous interior of each box ensures your candle or diffuser a long life, preserving fragrance as its flame slumbers, nestled in a cool embrace of hand-pleated tissue imported from Switzerland, exclusively dyed for D.L. & Co.

The Vessel

Mr. D.L. love & appreciation for finely crafted glassware served as the inspiration for this distinctive piece. Evoking the sublime vessels that flourished at the turn of the century until the middle of the 20th centry, it recalls the Art Deco period’s penchant for organic yet stylized contours. The true brilliance of this floral design lies not only in its visual elegance, but also in that the form itself actually amplifies the fragrance while the candle is alight. When awakened, the candle’s fragrance reverberates into the air with a surprising liveliness. The bowl is created from fine grade australian sand, selected for its clarity, weight and ability to display an intense hue. The bottom of each vessel bears the artist’s initials, and every bowl is hand-tinted, hence making each one unique.

The Wax

D.L. & Co. candles are comprised of a patented blend of high-grade european waxes, many of which are used for luxury body creams and lotions. One immediately feels the difference in the wax when one runs a finger along its milky surface. Moise but not greasy, it is virtually absorbed into the skin upon contact. This formul not only burns cleaner than any other candle, it also houses the delicately balance essential oils without altering their fragile character. The wax in these candles is specifically designed to have a low melting temperature, thereby yielding a greater liquified surface area by which to better release the fragrance held within.

I am opening up one box of the “Absinthe” Signature collection candle to show you the beautiful hand pleated lining and packaging , the attention of details Mr. Little has put into all of his products!

Absinthe scent is truly decadent, makes me think of Victorian era opulence.

Their attention to detail really made my day, the larger candles come with a little card about the candle fragrance as well.

The unveiling.. I love this candle, and after it’s used up you can use it for other candles (votives) or as a candy dish (for the larger ones).

Modern Day Tea Parties & The Original Boston Tea Party in 1773

Posted in D.L. & Co., Home Decor, News & Politics with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 13, 2010 by Alan + Mei-Mei the pug

Today is an interesting day for all Americans! No matter what’s your stand on today’s “Tax day tea party” it’s definitely an wake-up call for all of us to watch what we spend and how we spend it. and I want to make this clear that this posting is not about who is right who is wrong, I am just fascinated about how this “Tea Party” started. So I did a little research on the original Boston Tea Party in Year 1773 and here is a little history about it

The Boston Tea Party was a direct action protest by colonists in Boston, a town in the British colony of Massachusetts, against the British government. On December 16, 1773, after officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain, a group of colonists boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it into Boston Harbor. The incident remains an iconic event of American history, and has often been referenced in other political protests.

The Tea Party was the culmination of a resistance movement throughout British America against the Tea Act, which had been passed by the British Parliament in 1773. Colonists objected to the Tea Act for a variety of reasons, especially because they believed that it violated their constitutional right to be taxed only by their own elected representatives. Protestors had successfully prevented the unloading of taxed tea in three other colonies, but in Boston, embattled Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson refused to allow the tea to be returned to Britain. He apparently did not expect that the protestors would choose to destroy the tea rather than concede the authority of a legislature in which they were not directly represented.

The Boston Tea Party was a key event in the growth of the American Revolution. Parliament responded in 1774 with the Coercive Acts, which, among other provisions, closed Boston’s commerce until the British East India Company had been repaid for the destroyed tea. Colonists in turn responded to the Coercive Acts with additional acts of protest, and by convening the First Continental Congress, which petitioned for repeal of the acts and coordinated colonial resistance to them. The crisis escalated, and the American Revolutionary War began near Boston in 1775.

Today, we’ve a modern day tea party in cities all over the U.S and it is an collaborative grassroots effort organized by Smart Girl Politics, Top Conservatives on Twitter, the DontGo Movement and many other online groups/coalitions.

The Tea Party protests, in their current form, began in early 2009 when Rick Santelli, the On Air Editor for CNBC, set out on a rant to expose the bankrupt liberal agenda of the White House Administration and Congress. Specifically, the flawed “Stimulus Bill” and pork filled budget.

During Rick’s rant, he called for a “Chicago tea Party” where advocates of the free-market system could join in a protest against out of control government spending.

A few days later, grassroots activists and average Joe Americans began organizing what would soon become the Nationwide Chicago Tea Party effort.

On February 27th, an estimated 30,000 Americans took to the street in 40+ cities accross the country in the first nationwide “Tea Party” protest.

Organizers of the February 27th events pledged to continue on with an even bigger and better protest to follow the first. With April 15th being “Tax Day”, it was decided to schedule the second round of Tea Party protests to ride alongside the tax deadline.

And with that, the “Tax Day Tea Party”, the second round of the Nationwide Tea Party protests, moved into reality. Let’s unite as Americans, tell the government stop wasting our tax money! here is a video of the 9-12 Tea party. It’s time we make America great again! no more political games!

After all these “Tea Party” Stories you’ve seen on TV, why not treat yourself with with D.L & Co. Modern Alchemy’s “Boston Tea Party” aromatic candle and let the beautiful scent acompany you to read more about the history of the original Boston Tea Party in 1773?!
